Man fined over waste dumped from sold van

The former owner of a van has been fined in a duty of care case after waste in the vehicle when it was sold was later fly-tipped.

Wycombe Magistrates Court heard that an enforcement officer from Buckinghamshire County Council found a pile of waste dumped at Iver in August 2016.

Wayne Johnson, 31, of Langley, Berkshire, sold a Ford Transit van in July 2016 and the back of the van was full of his waste when it changed hands.

He made no arrangements for the separate disposal of the rubbish and failed to carry out any checks on the person buying the van. That rubbish was then dumped illegally.

Johnson, who admitted failing in his duty of care as a householder, was fined £405. He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,092.50 and a victim surcharge of £40.

The case was brought by Buckinghamshire County Council on behalf of the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire, which launched its ‘Illegal Dumping Costs’ campaign in November 2003 to combat fly-tipping and waste management offences.

The partnership has secured nearly 600 convictions.
